Kurt Thomas is an Indigenous singer, songwriter, and traditional artist bringing awareness and understanding to our ears through his descriptive lyrics and catchy acoustic hooks. His questions and observations on people is truly a window into the mind of every person unsure of where they fit in this world. No matter the stage, every performance captures the emotions and energy he had when writing the song, leaving the audience feeling more like a friend than a fan. Thomas admits, “My songs are just journal entries that rhyme.”
Born and raised in the beautiful agricultural Central Valley of California, Kurt was taught three chords by his father who only knew three chords, and from there he created his unique fingerpicking style, exploring the fretboard through trial and error, developing a songwriting craft unaware of the traditional steps. He became enamored by the guitar work of Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, the descriptive lyrical writing of Paul Simon, then the 90’s alternative influence brought structure to his words and music, allowing a pop element to emerge. His sound would be found on a playlist next to Jason Mraz, Ed Sheeran, and Johnny Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls).
Kurt has released two EP’s as the singer/songwriter for the band Greyweather, a full length acoustic solo album, and is an official songwriter for Songlorious and Song Finch. His soulful and calming tone has kept him steadily performing for almost 20 years, gracing the stage with national touring acts Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Refreshments, and Roger Cline & the Peacemakers. He is honored to have also performed with Native American artists Pura Fe and Cary Morin, musicians inspiring change “in a good way” for Native peoples.
A member of the Seminole Tribal Nation of Oklahoma, he keeps his traditions alive by participating in inter-tribal drum circles, Native chant singing, and storytelling. When he is not writing music he finds comfort and peace through traditional bead-looming, fashioning walking sticks, or long hikes with the Great Spirit. Grateful for his musical abilities, he stays humble knowing he is merely a conduit for the Creator.
Thomas lived and performed along the Colorado Front Range for 15 years during his career, playing festivals and fairs, stages large and small, events like Frontier Days and FOCOMX Music Fest. He now resides in San Diego, California, and continues his pursuit of happiness through singing and performing for audiences of all life.
Kurt Thomas is currently working on a new solo album expected to release this summer and will be available on all platforms. His band Greyweather can be found wherever music is sold.
